Afghan Hound

Would you like an elegant goofball to join your family? I carry myself with a dignified air and can be somewhat aloof, but deep down I’m a sweet and silly soul. Be aware that I have an independent streak and may stubbornly ignore you at times. I’m quite intelligent and curious about things. I’m a gentle friend with children yet can be shy and even timid with strangers. I may not be overly affectionate, but I’m deeply loyal to my family.

Being a member of the hound family, I was originally bred for hunting, so I do require regular exercise. A fast-paced run is better for me than a walk, but keep me on a leash or in an enclosed space so I don’t take off on my own. Oh, and I’m a great jumper too. Despite being active, I’m a house dog who enjoys a soft bed. It should be a good-sized bed: I’m a fairly large breed, standing about 27 inches tall and weighing between 50 and 60 pounds.

Much of my aristocratic appearance is due to my lush, silky coat, which can be gold, fawn, white, brindle, red, cream, gray, blue, or a tricolor mix. To look my best, I require frequent baths, blow-drying, and grooming.

I have a life span of 12 to 14 years and am generally quite healthy. I do have a minor risk of developing cataracts and can be prone to tail injuries. Necrotic myelopathy and CHD can sometimes develop.
