American Water Spaniel

Do you have a home by a lake, a pond, or the ocean? If so, count me in! I’m a smart sporting dog who was bred to flush and retrieve game, and I love the water. While I’m all business in the field, I love to play and have fun. I’m an affectionate family dog and a happy charmer who’s friendly with everyone—though I can be a bit timid at times. I can be stubborn and have been known to bark, and some of us may whine or drool.

Like any hunting dog I do need daily exercise, such as a brisk walk or a swim. I can become overactive and edgy without regular activity, and I have a slight tendency to become overweight. My body is muscular but a manageable size, ranging from 15 to 18 inches tall and from 25 to 45 pounds, with males being heavier. My oily coat can be wavy or curled and benefits from weekly brushing and periodic baths. Periodic clipping is also necessary, especially around the feet. My color can be brown, dark chocolate, or solid liver.

Like most spaniels my ears should be checked regularly to keep them clean and free from infection. I have no major health risks and will live from 10 to 12 years on average. I am slightly prone to lenticular opacity and hip dysplasia. Patellar luxation and PRA also have a slight chance of occurrence. I have a very high pain tolerance, so I might be ill or injured but not outwardly show it.
