Black and Russian Terrier
I’m a multifaceted fairly new and rare breed. A working dog, I’m a confident and powerful protector—but I also enjoy playing with the kids. I’m affectionate and need to be around people, especially family. I can be aloof with strangers, carefully sizing them up but never acting shy or aggressive. I make a good guard dog.
Blackies are a large breed, and I stand 26 to 30 inches with a weight range of 80 to 140 pounds. I’m not a good fit for apartment living but do well with novice dog owners. My coloring is solid black and may or may not have a scattering of gray hairs. My tousled double coat ranges from about 1 to 6 inches in length and needs a thorough combing once or twice a week. A trim every 6 to 8 weeks is also recommended.
I don’t have a high energy level, so a daily walk or tossing a ball every day should suit my needs. I am fine in cold weather but not very tolerant of hot conditions. I’m heavily muscled but agile and a quick learner—though I can be stubborn. Be sure to let me know that you’re in charge!
Though like most big dogs I’m slow to mature, I develop a natural protective instinct within the first year and will be devoted to my family for 10 to 14 years. I am prone to developing hip dysplasia with a lower risk for elbow dysplasia. PRA may also occur.
