If you’re an active family that likes to hunt, I’d love to join in. Like any spaniel I’m quite friendly and lovable. I’m also smart and alert, well suited to retrieving game or keeping a watchful eye on my family. As the official dog of South Carolina, I’m accustomed to swampy terrain but not a fan of very hot or cold weather.
I’m very affectionate with family and kids, less so with strangers. I don’t do well when left alone and want to be in the action with a job to do; I can become destructive if bored. Like any sporting breed I have a tendency to wander and may bark or howl. I have a very high energy level and if not out in the field, I should be taken on a long, brisk walk every day. I’m obedient and fairly easy to train.
I’m medium in size, weighing 25 to 40 pounds and standing about 14 to 18 inches tall. My coat can be flat or slightly wavy with feathering at the ears, legs, chest, and belly (like many spaniels). My coloring can be a rich chocolate, brown, or liver; I can be solid or have no markings. I’m not a big shedder but do require regular brushing to avoid matting and an occasional trim. My ears should be checked regularly for signs of infection.
Common health concerns are hip dysplasia and cataracts. Heart and skin problems can also occur but are limited. With proper nutrition, exercise, and checkups, I will be a cherished companion for 14 to 16 years.
