Families looking for a large and lovable shaggy-haired pal can’t go wrong with me. I’m an affectionate giant who’s devoted to family and eager to please. While playful and friendly with familiar people, I can be aloof with strangers and other dogs. I’m good with kids but can tend to herd them with nudges and barks. I have a warm heart and gentle spirit—a big, cozy housedog who does well in an urban or rural setting.

I’m bright and easy to train, and I prefer some type of activity and social interaction every day. A long walk and some extended play will keep me satisfied. I’m very adaptable and good for first-time dog owners. My suspicion of strangers and protective nature make me a good guard dog.

I do take up space in the house, standing 22 to 27 inches tall and weighing 75 to 100 pounds. My long, wavy coat makes me appear even bigger—and be warned that the coarse hair requires extensive brushing and combing every other day to avoid matting. I get dirty easily and need a bath every 6 to 8 weeks. My coloring can be black, shades of gray, or tawny shades, sometimes in combination and with a scattering of white hairs.

Primary health concerns are gastric bloat and hip dysplasia, with a possible risk of night blindness. Retinal atrophy and heart problems can occur but are not common. On average I’ll be a faithful family member for 10 to 12 years.
