Chesapeake Bay Retriever
Are you one of those hardy souls who does polar plunge challenges into icy water? I’ll be happy to join you! As a waterfowl retriever I was bred to swim into cold water—and I love it. After a brisk workout I’m calm and mellow indoors. My overall demeanor is bright and happy. I’m solid yet sensitive, and I enjoy showing affection. I enjoy children but won’t tolerate bad behavior. My strong work ethic and alertness make me a good watchdog.
I’m obedient and easy to train—although I can be stubborn in getting my own way, and my size can overpower lax owners. Chessies need to know who’s the boss; structure and discipline will keep everyone happy. An experienced dog owner is a better choice for me. A good long walk or swim each day will provide the exercise I need if I’m not out in the field.
My thick coat may be brown, sedge, or deadgrass (straw) in color. It provides insulation against the cold, and the oily hair repels water. Bathing is rarely necessary and can strip the beneficial oils. I’m a manageably large dog at 55 to 80 pounds and 21 to 26 inches tall.
Whether I’m employed for hunting or as a cozy foot warmer, I’ll be a loyal member of the family for 10 to 13 years. I’m fairly hardy but prone to hip dysplasia and gastric torsion (bloat), I and have a slight risk for eye problems and elbow dysplasia.
