Irish Terrier

If there were an X Games for dogs, you’d see me on the winner’s podium every time! Bold, brash, and always up for action, I’m considered a bit of a daredevil. I can be mellow and mannered in the house so am suitable for an apartment, but I’ll always have a terrier’s feisty demeanor. I’m not overly friendly or affectionate; I’d rather show off. Kids are fun playmates for me, but I can provoke other dogs.

I do require firm training—and my independent, willful attitude can make this a challenge. Let me know who’s boss or I can be hard to manage. My barking makes me a good watchdog but can become excessive unless managed early. A brisk daily walk or jog and a spirited game help me keep relatively calm in the house. I’m also a smart and adaptable hunting companion.

The only all-red terrier, my stiff, wiry coat needs a bristle-brush combing once or twice a week and stripping several times a year. I can be clipped, but over time my coat will become softer and lighter. My coloring can be bright red, golden red, red wheaten, or fawn. I shed very little and present few problems for allergy sufferers. I weigh about 25 to 27 pounds and stand between18 and 20 inches tall.

Despite my reckless nature I’m a long-lived dog with no major health concerns aside from a slight risk of urinary tract stones. Be prepared to enjoy my rollicking antics for 12 to 15 years.
