Irish Water Spaniel

If you have a waterside home, I’ve got my beach gear all packed! Bred to retrieve water fowl and small game, I’m very bright, brave, and full of enthusiasm. I love to swim and play and can be downright goofy. I’m friendly, affectionate, and generally good with kids, though I may sometimes be skittish around them. Barking is reserved only to warn of strangers.

My energy level isn’t excessive, but I do like to be active with an hour of running or vigorous play every day. Obedience and agility courses will keep me from being bored. I can adapt to apartment life and new dog owners but do require a slightly firm approach. I’m easy to train yet will take off after small prey and may wander if not fenced in.

My curly coat tends to be well tolerated by people with allergies. It’s a solid reddish-brown color and ends in a tapered “rat tail.” Although I shed very little, my oily coat does attract dirt. Brushing two or three times a week will keep me clean and avoid matting. My ears should be checked often for infection.

I’m a robust, medium-sized dog weighing 45 to 65 pounds and standing 21 to 24 inches tall. I come from hardy stock, with the only significant potential health issue being hip dysplasia. Weight gain can be a problem, so go easy on goodies. With proper diet and exercise, I’ll be racing you out to the lake raft for 10 to 12 years.
