Tibetan Mastiff

If you’re game for a tough debate with a formidable canine opponent, please sign here. I’m a beautiful, intelligent, big dog who is independent, strong willed, and powerful. Taking me on requires responsibility and commitment. If you want a sweet little pup who follows your every command—or are a new dog owner—please look elsewhere.

With proper management I’m mellow, gentle, and loving with family, yet I’m staunchly protective of them. I’m territorial around strangers and other dogs, and may respond aggressively to loud children. My frequent bark is a loud bellow. Early training and socialization can help, especially with puppy behaviors that can be dangerous when I’m fully grown. But my headstrong nature can make training difficult.

Exercise needs can be met with a daily walk. I’m not highly energetic—please don’t sign me up for agility or obedience competitions. Weight gain can be a problem, so resist my pleas for treats if you can.

I stand 24 to 26 inches tall and weigh 75 to 160 pounds, with a long, thick, coarse coat and heavy mane. I have little odor and need bathing only once a month, but I should be brushed every few days to avoid tangles and mats. My coloring may be black, brown, gold, or blue, with or without tan markings.

Compared to other large dogs I have a relatively long life span of 10 to 14 years. Potential health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, short-term bone inflammation (growing pains), joint lameness, hypothyroidism, and an inherited neuropathy that can cause paralysis.
