American English Coonhound

If you want a smart, tireless companion for outdoor adventures, I’m up to the task! I’m bred primarily as a hunting dog and am graced with strength and speed. Be aware that I can be a wanderer, as my instinct is to chase prey.

I’m a confident and social sort with a sweet disposition, getting along well with children and other dogs. When home I’m mellow and good-natured, though I can get lonely…and have a tendency to become destructive and to bark and howl if left alone. My voice is loud, so consider your neighbors before inviting me in. You should also know that I’m not well suited to life in an apartment and prefer an experienced dog owner, rather than a first-timer.

I’m a high-energy breed and require regular vigorous physical exercise and mental stimulation. A long daily run and a game will do the trick. Weight gain can be a problem, so go easy on treats and keep me active, and I will live about 10 to 12 years. I’m a large dog, standing 23 to 26 inches tall and weighing between 40 and 65 pounds. Hip dysplasia is the most common health issue to watch for, and I can also be prone to ear infections, progressive retinal atrophy, and polyradiculoneuritis.

I have a short, easy-care coat that may be a mix of red and white, blue and white, white and black, or tricolored, with or without ticking. Periodic brushing and an occasional bath are all I need to look great for our next outing.
