A member of the wolf type of dogs, I’m athletic and clever. My alert, fearless nature makes me a good guard dog. In general I’m gentle and faithful with family members. I can be good with children and other pets but need to understand authority and boundaries. With strangers I tend to be more reserved.
I’m a working breed and prefer to have a job set out for me. In my native France I often herd sheep and cattle. I enjoy learning new things; however, training can require considerable time because I don’t reach physical and mental maturity until 3 years of age. Brief daily training exercises are more effective than long sessions.
If not regularly active and mentally challenged, I can become destructive. Daily long walks, a safe space to run free, and interesting games will keep me healthy and content. I’ll do best with a large yard but can tolerate an apartment given ample exercise. If used as a guard dog, I can sleep outside and adapt well to varying weather conditions.
My coarse, dense overcoat may be black and tan or harlequin (gray, black, and tan) and does not require heavy grooming. I’m a large breed, ranging from 24 to 27 inches in height and weighing 70 to 110 pounds.
I have an average life span of 10 to 12 years. Overall I’m a hardy breed but can be prone to gastric torsion (bloat) and hip dysplasia.
