If you’re a fan of courtroom dramas, I’m the only dog you’ll see on the witness stand. My famed ability to trail human scent is allowable as evidence in most courts! A tough, stubborn, and tenacious tracker, when home from work I’m gentle as a lamb, great with kids, and friendly toward everyone. I also like to play and require daily exercise if not kept as a working hound, especially during the first few years when I’m particularly energetic.
I’m probably not a good match if you’re a neatnik. I drool a lot. The loose folds in my face and my eyes need daily cleaning; my ears require weekly cleaning. My thin coat needs only brushing once a week and an occasional bath to keep my distinctive skin folds clean and free of odor. My coloring may be black and tan, liver and tan, or red—sometimes with white flecks.
I’m a big dog at 23 to 27 inches tall, and I can weigh between 80 and 110 pounds. My demeanor is generally very sweet and easygoing, but I do have a stubborn, independent streak. Training me for obedience can be a challenge, though I’m all in when it comes to tracking sessions.
I’m generally a healthy breed but can be susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, ectropion/entropion, and gastric bloat. Dermatitis can develop in the folds of my skin. With proper care and nutrition, I should be an affectionate companion for 11 to 15 years.
