Despite my serious mug, I have legions of fans: I’m in the top 5 of America’s favorite breeds. I’m one of the most mellow dogs around; my energy level isn’t high, but I’m jolly and playful. I’m good with children and friendly toward strangers and other pets, but reserved with other dogs. You’ll find me eager to please yet a bit stubborn. I’m strong and courageous—but a lover, not a fighter.
I don’t require much exercise and can’t tolerate long walks, runs, or extremes of hot or cold. I also can’t swim, so be watchful near water. Weight gain is a problem; go easy on the treats!
I stand about 12 to 15 inches tall and weigh 40 to 50 pounds but feel heavy for my size; it can be tricky to pick me up. My coat may be brindle, fawn, red, random patches of these colors, or white. My fine, glossy coat needs only a weekly pass with a bristle brush, and my face should be washed daily. I am a drooler.
Be aware that I’m prone to a number of health issues. Major areas of concern include hip dysplasia, undersized nostrils, shoulder luxation, an internalized tail, and an elongated soft palate. Minor concerns include eye problems, elbow dysplasia, and patellar luxation. The folds of my skin are prone to dermatitis if not kept clean. With loving care I’ll be an affectionate and loyal friend for 8 to 10 years.
