English Springer Spaniel

Trusted in the fields and beloved at home, it’s easy to see why I’m a popular spaniel. My joy for life is off the charts, and my ever-wagging tail lets everyone know I’m friendly and up for play. I’m great for families with kids and love to be part of the action. Due to my social nature, I don’t like being left alone.

I’m enthusiastic, smart, and eager to please, so training is fairly easy. I’m good with new pet owners, though be aware that I can be a barker and have a tendency to roam off. To keep me calm and well behaved indoors, take me on a long walk or field run or give me a challenging obedience session every day.

At 18 to 21 inches tall and 40 to 50 pounds, I’m a medium-sized breed. My double coat is waterproof and weatherproof, perfect for long hunting sessions. I should be brushed several times a week to limit shedding, matting, and tangles—with a few trims a year to highlight my classic face. Common color patterns are black or liver with white markings, or white with black or liver markings. Blue or liver roan (colored and white hairs mixed) can also occur.

Health issues that pose concern are hip and elbow dysplasia, otitis externa (ear canal inflammation), and eye problems. Skin fragility, gastric bloat, and rage syndrome are less common risks. With loving care and exercise, I’ll be happy in the field or on the couch for 10 to 14 years.
