I’m a complex dog, sweet and luxurious looking but with a fierce protective instinct. Bred in ancient Hungary to guard livestock, I put family above all else. I can be playful with family and am gentle with children but am not overly affectionate. My temperament adapts to different situations—from clowning with trusted family members to fearlessly attacking intruders.
Needless to say I’m not a match for everyone, particularly new dog owners. Independent, intelligent, and stubborn, training me requires patience and firmness. I’m one of the most active of the very large breeds and need a good long walk or run every day to keep me settled in the house. I prefer to have a job, which can be herding cattle or guarding the kids. As a natural herder I’m fine being alone, though I have been known to bark and drool.
I’m a very large and imposing dog, standing 26 to 30 inches tall and weighing 70 to 115 pounds—so I’m not well suited to apartment life. I’m best known for my striking white coat, which is actually a double coat made up of coarse guard hair that protects a fine, soft undercoat. Brushing and combing every few days to help reduce matting is necessary, as my dense outer coat can grow up to 6 inches long. I’m odorless and bathing is rarely necessary; an occasional dry shampoo can keep me clean and fresh.
I have robust health and will be loyally devoted to the family for 9 to 12 years. Hip dysplasia, joint lameness, and other bone problems are potential issues of concern. Weight gain can also be a concern, so don’t overfeed me, please.
